The Georgian NGO “Young Barristers” becomes a member of the Consultative Council of the Ministry of Corrections of Georgia

The organization “Young Barristers” became a member organization of the Consultative Council of the

Ministry of Corrections of Georgia.  On December 7, 2015, the Deputy Minister, Tamar Khulordava officially informed the organization regarding the fact. 

“The Ministry of Corrections is very grateful to you for expressing your will and readiness to participate in the work of the Consultative Council. I am sure, that our cooperation will be very successful and together we will make an important contribution to the development and improvement of the Penitential System itself. Lots of important issues have to be considered by the Ministry of Corrections for today and your recommendations are going to be very helpful for us as well as your efforts to promote establishment of the best foreign practices and international standards in the field of   penitentiary” – says the letter from the Ministry to the organization.

The Consultative Council was created on the basis of the Minister, Kakhi Kakhishvili’s order. It was created in order to promote the transparency, publicity and public engagement, in the process of the implementation of the reforms in the Penitential System.  The Consultative Council will draft relevant recommendations and research foreign and international practice in the Penitential systems. In addition to this, the council will analyze already implemented, current and planned reforms in the Ministry of Corrections of Georgia. The board of the Council   will include representatives of NGOs and international organizations, as well as experts of the penitentiary and non-governmental punishments.

The First meeting of the Consultative Council will be held on December 11, 2015 and will symbolically be dedicated to the International Human Right’s Day. During the meeting, the Ministry will represent a brief report on the next year strategy of the Ministry. The meeting is supported by the EU project “Support to the Reform of the Criminal Justice System in Georgia”.
