Silence on the facts of trafficking in Adjara creates preconditions for legalization of prostitution in Georgia

29 June, 2012

Georgia by creating the real facts of trafficking on the black see littoral, impunity of criminal businesses and with irreconcilable positions of local population is in front of an international scandal. On the example of gonio, portrayed by the media, tourist attraction may be put under the blow, which is expressed in economic losses. The real destination about 27 hotels still remains beyond investigation. Citizens indicates, that the hotels whose owners are Turkish citizens represent an informal brothels, where work women from the central asian countries, mostly from the republic of Uzbekistan, nearly about 500 women. Among of victims there are deported Kazakhstan from turkey,Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Ukrain, Azerbaijan. According to the locals, from 22:00 till nights the safety of their movements is not protected, the situation is the example of unprecedented dishonesty. Recently there was facts of beating the victims, murders and suicide cases. As we were informed, trafficking became visible during the last year in Batumi, kobuleti and gonio, which is the result of banned clubs and entertainment objects from Trabson to Sarfi and now Adjara is the ground of trafficking. Victims of trafficking are forced to serve only Turkish citizens who use the mentioned hotels for rest.

“Young barristers” request , the law enforcement agencies of Georgia to start relevant action and begin investigation. Georgia is the participant of the international agreements against trafficking and the criminal code sanctifies offences on the Georgian territory ( article 143.1, article 143.2, article 143.3)  we appeal international organizations in Georgia to provide them about the current situation, also the corps of diplomatic to solve their citizens’ problems. We already are in front of deplorable reality, because the united states, the state department in 2012 report , Georgia is named as a source and transit country of trafficking (covering 186 countries) which compared to the 2011 report is different assessment, when Georgia was one of the active country in fighting against trafficking.( the country fully complied the standard of trafficking eradication.) Recently the monitoring group of the European convention developed critical recommendations toward Georgia.

“Young barristers” think that, if the state will not start a prompt investigation published by the media on the basis of local citizens evidence, doubts emerged in the society on gonio example about the creation of preconditions for legalization of prostitution will be real. If the government aims to create a legislative basis for prostitution legalization,it should become known to the public and the society should have possibility to conduct a healthy debates on the issue, unfortunately nor in the legal community, there is no common sence. Georgian community should agree whether this makes the social problem to legalize or to regulate, because the problem is directly related to several factors- the expediency of conduct legitimacy with moral norms, human security and health and etc.

“Young barristers” appeal relevant departments in order to react on the published material by the media-holding “Adjara PS” on june,2012 in Kobuleti and study the activity of the hotel’s Turkish owner; respond to the local publis’s onterest, according to which whether or not there is an unofficial brothel and victims of trafficking in the mentioned tourist city.
